The West Cork Railway
In 1860 The west Cork Railway Co. was founded. The First train began to chug in May 1866. The West Cork Railway was a great asset to the area. It was a safe and convenient way to travel. There were 12 trains a day from 5:30 am to 9:30 pm. It created employment and it was much needed as ways of travel were limited. Ballineen was the stop half way between Cork and Bantry. Henry Conebeare was the engineer responsible for keeping things in order. The trains carried passengers as well as flax and beet.
On Good Friday 1961 we bode a sad farewell to the West Cork Railway. It was a fantastic railway and is sorely missed.
